The Power of Movement: How Exercise Benefits People with Cancer

A cancer diagnosis brings many emotional, mental and physical challenges. While treatment options like surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation are often front and centre, research consistently shows that physical activity can be a safe and effective part of cancer care. Whether you’re newly diagnosed, undergoing treatment, or in remission, here are some of the key benefits of staying active:

1. Reduces Treatment Side Effects

Fatigue is one of the most common and debilitating side effects of cancer treatment. Regular moderate intensity exercise has been shown to improve physical function which can help to reduce fatigue symptoms and increase energy levels. Exercise can also help manage other treatment related side effects such as pain, lymphedema, and chemotherapy induced peripheral neuropathy/cardiotoxicity.

2. Improves Mental Health

A cancer journey can take a toll on mental well-being, often leading to stress, anxiety, and depression. Exercise has shown to releases endorphins — the brain’s natural “feel-good” chemicals, which help to improve mood, lower stress levels, and improve sleep quality.

3. Maintains Physical Function and Strength

Cancer and its treatments can lead to muscle loss, reduced mobility, and overall deconditioning. Incorporating a combination of both aerobic activity and resistance training can help patients improve muscle mass and fitness, maintain bone health, and maintain flexibility and balance, which helps to improve overall function and quality of life.

4. May Improve Treatment Outcomes

Emerging studies suggest that exercise may enhance the effectiveness of some treatments and lower the risk of cancer recurrence in certain types of cancer. It may also contribute to longer survival by supporting heart health, metabolic function, and weight management.

Exercise doesn’t need to be intense to make an impact. What matters most is consistency and movement that feels good to you. Whether it’s a Pilates class, a walk with friends, or strength workout at home, moving your body following a cancer diagnosis helps to improve overall health and quality of life.
